Coding for Kids: A Parent’s Guide to Getting Started 

You've probably noticed that coding for kids is everywhere these days. From online tutorials to weekend workshops, the options seem endless. But when is the right time for your child to actually start? And how do you choose between all the different programmes out there?

We run Kids Coding Academy in Naas and Newbridge, County Kildare, and these are the two questions parents ask us most often. After years of teaching children aged 7 to 15, we've learned what actually works when it comes to introducing coding. It's not about starting as early as possible or choosing the fanciest platform. It's about finding the right fit for your child's development and learning style.

Seven to Eight Is the Sweet Spot for Starting

We typically start children at around 7 to 8 years old. That might sound specific, but there's a good reason for it.

By this age, most children have completed a couple of years in primary school. They've developed basic keyboard skills, which makes a real difference when they're trying to learn coding concepts. Before that age, they're often still getting comfortable with using a computer at all.

The cognitive development at this stage matters too. Seven and eight year olds can follow multi-step instructions, understand cause and effect, and handle a bit of problem-solving when things don't work the first time. Those skills form the foundation for everything that comes after in coding.

The Learning Management System Lets Everyone Learn Together

One of the biggest challenges in teaching coding for kids is that children develop at different rates. You might have a 10 year old who's never touched a computer sitting next to an 8 year old who's been tinkering with apps for years.

That's where our learning management system makes all the difference. Each child gets their own account, so they can move along at their own pace. You can have children in the class at different stages at the same time, and the instructor just goes between them all.

This means your child can join midterm without feeling behind. They start at the beginning themselves, even though other children in the classroom might be more advanced. They can all be in there together, and nobody feels rushed or held back.

We Start with Scratch and Progress to Python

Parents often ask which programming language their child will learn, and the honest answer is that it depends on their ability.

We usually start everybody on Scratch. It's a block-based language, which means children drag and drop visual blocks instead of typing out code. It's perfect for building confidence and understanding how programming logic works without getting bogged down in syntax.

From there, children move on to Roblox and Minecraft coding. These platforms keep them engaged because they're creating things in environments they already know and love.

Then comes Python. The modules we've designed bring children along gradually, so they build up their confidence as they transition from block-based languages to text-based ones. A 15 year old might be working in Python while a 7 year old in the same room is still on Scratch, and both are learning exactly what they need at their level.

Instructor Support Beats Online Tutorials Every Time

I know the appeal of online coding tutorials. They're convenient, often free, and your child can do them from home.

But here's the problem: there's no help if they get stuck. And children always get stuck. That's part of learning to code.

With our instructor-supported classes, if a child gets stuck, they can just put their hand up and the instructor comes over and helps them. That immediate support keeps them from getting frustrated and giving up. It also means they learn the right habits from the start instead of developing workarounds that create problems later.

Self-paced doesn't mean alone. Our children follow along at their own pace on the learning management system, but they're doing it in a classroom with support right there when they need it.

Always Try a Free Trial First

Parents sometimes ask if their child is ready for coding classes. My answer is always the same: come for a free trial and find out.

We recommend a free trial so the child can come along and try us to see if it's something that they like. If they do like it, then they can join up. If it's not clicking yet, that's fine too. There's no pressure.

Some children take to coding immediately. Others need a few sessions to warm up. A trial lets you and your child see what the classes actually feel like before you commit to anything.

What to Look for in After-School Coding Programmes

If you're comparing different after-school coding programmes in Ireland, here's what really matters.

First, look for a convenient location. If it's a hassle to get there, your child won't go consistently, and consistency is what builds skills.

Second, check the time slots. After-school programmes need to fit around your family's schedule, not the other way around.

Third, see if they offer a free trial. Any programme that believes in what they're doing should let your child try a class before you pay.

Fourth, find out if your child can join at any time and move along at their own pace. Programmes that only accept children at the start of term or that require everyone to stay in lockstep don't work for most families.

These practical factors matter more than fancy marketing or claims about which software companies they work with. What matters is whether your child will actually attend, engage, and learn.

Getting Your Child Started

Coding for kids doesn't have to be complicated. Start at the right age (around 7 to 8), choose a programme with instructor support and self-paced learning, and let your child try it before you commit.
