At Kids Coding Academy, we’ve been helping children aged 7 to 15 discover the world of coding through our self-paced learning system. We’ve learned quite a bit about what works for Irish families, and I’d love to share some insights to help you make the best decision for your child. Whether your child has never touched a line of code or has been tinkering with computers for years, there’s a pathway that can work for them.
What Age Should Irish Children Start Learning to Code?
We find that age 7 is a good age to start learning coding. By this age, children have completed at least two years in primary school, so they’re used to learning in a structured environment. They’ve also been doing some maths, which gives them a foundation for understanding the logical thinking that coding requires.
At 7, most children have developed enough keyboard skills to navigate a computer comfortably. They’re also naturally inquisitive and keen to learn new things, which makes it an ideal time to introduce coding concepts. That said, every child is different—some might be ready a bit earlier, whilst others might benefit from starting a bit later. The key is that they have basic typing abilities and an interest in learning something new.
How Does Self-Paced Learning Work for Coding for Kids Ireland?
One of the questions we get asked most frequently is how children of different ages and abilities can learn together in the same classroom. The answer lies in our learning management system, which is truly the backbone of what makes Kids Coding Academy different.
Each child gets their own laptop and logs in to their own account on the learning management system. This means they’ll follow a tailored curriculum that’s right for their level, whether they’re complete beginners or have been coding for a while. The actual content they’re learning from is delivered by the learning management system, which presents lessons, exercises, and challenges suited to where they are in their coding journey.
If a child gets stuck, they can go back over something at their own pace, or they can raise their hand and ask our instructor for help. Children who aren’t getting stuck can move ahead faster. Rather than a traditional group setting where everyone has to move at the same speed, each child can progress independently. They’re not being held up or forced to speed up by other people in the class, which creates a much less stressful learning environment.
What Coding Languages Will My Child Learn?
The progression through different coding languages is carefully designed to build skills step by step. Children start off with Scratch, which is a block-based coding language. Scratch is brilliant for beginners because it allows them to understand coding concepts—like loops, conditionals, and variables—without getting bogged down in complicated syntax. They’re essentially dragging and dropping colourful blocks to create programs, which makes it visual and engaging.
Once they’ve got the hang of Scratch, they’ll often move on to Roblox and Minecraft. These platforms are fantastic because children are already excited about them, which means they’re motivated to learn the coding skills needed to create games and experiences within these worlds.
As they become more confident, children can then progress to Python, which is a text-based coding language used by professional developers around the world. Some children also explore JavaScript, depending on what they’re interested in. This natural progression from visual block-based coding to actual text-based programming languages gives children a solid foundation whilst keeping them engaged with things they find exciting.
How Much Do Coding Classes for Kids in Ireland Cost?
We know that cost is an important consideration for families, and we’ve worked hard to make our classes accessible. We charge €87 for a month, which gets your child one class a week. That works out at about €20 per class, which we think is pretty competitive compared to other coding classes in Ireland.
If you were to hire an individual instructor for one-on-one lessons, that’s going to cost considerably more. We believe some other coding classes out there are more expensive as well, so we think our pricing offers good value—especially when you consider the personalised learning experience each child receives through our learning management system.
Can My Child Try a Class Before Committing?
Absolutely. We give every child a free trial coding class. This gives them the chance to see whether they enjoy it, and it also gives us the opportunity to assess what level they’re at so we know what curriculum to set them on.
We’ve found that this trial class is invaluable for both parents and children. Sometimes parents worry that their child won’t enjoy coding, or that they’ll be behind others in the class. The trial session usually puts those fears to rest because children quickly see that they can work at their own pace, and there’s no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
Can Children Join Midterm or Do They Need to Wait?
Here’s one of the aspects of Kids Coding Academy that parents appreciate most: we don’t have terms. Our classes run all year round, and that’s the beauty of the learning management system—anybody can join at any time, regardless of their level of experience.
This means you don’t have to wait until September or January to get your child started. If you decide in March that you’d like your child to learn coding, they can start straight away. We can have a complete beginner and an intermediate child joining at the same time, and they’ll both work on independent curriculums tailored to their abilities. This flexibility makes it much easier for busy families to fit coding classes into their schedules without having to wait months for the “right” time to start.
Where Are Coding Classes Available in Ireland?
We currently offer live, in-person classes—we don’t offer any online sessions. Our classes are held in Naas in County Kildare and Newbridge in Kildare. We’ll soon be opening classes in Cavan as well, which will serve families in a new area.
