You've probably noticed that coding for kids is everywhere these days. From online tutorials to weekend workshops, the options seem endless. But when is the right time for your child to actually start? And how do you choose between all the different programmes out there?

We run Kids Coding Academy in Naas and Newbridge, County Kildare, and these are the two questions parents ask us most often. After years of teaching children aged 7 to 15, we've learned what actually works when it comes to introducing coding. It's not about starting as early as possible or choosing the fanciest platform. It's about finding the right fit for your child's development and learning style.

Seven to Eight Is the Sweet Spot for Starting

We typically start children at around 7 to 8 years old. That might sound specific, but there's a good reason for it.

By this age, most children have completed a couple of years in primary school. They've developed basic keyboard skills, which makes a real difference when they're trying to learn coding concepts. Before that age, they're often still getting comfortable with using a computer at all.

The cognitive development at this stage matters too. Seven and eight year olds can follow multi-step instructions, understand cause and effect, and handle a bit of problem-solving when things don't work the first time. Those skills form the foundation for everything that comes after in coding.

The Learning Management System Lets Everyone Learn Together

One of the biggest challenges in teaching coding for kids is that children develop at different rates. You might have a 10 year old who's never touched a computer sitting next to an 8 year old who's been tinkering with apps for years.

That's where our learning management system makes all the difference. Each child gets their own account, so they can move along at their own pace. You can have children in the class at different stages at the same time, and the instructor just goes between them all.

This means your child can join midterm without feeling behind. They start at the beginning themselves, even though other children in the classroom might be more advanced. They can all be in there together, and nobody feels rushed or held back.

We Start with Scratch and Progress to Python

Parents often ask which programming language their child will learn, and the honest answer is that it depends on their ability.

We usually start everybody on Scratch. It's a block-based language, which means children drag and drop visual blocks instead of typing out code. It's perfect for building confidence and understanding how programming logic works without getting bogged down in syntax.

From there, children move on to Roblox and Minecraft coding. These platforms keep them engaged because they're creating things in environments they already know and love.

Then comes Python. The modules we've designed bring children along gradually, so they build up their confidence as they transition from block-based languages to text-based ones. A 15 year old might be working in Python while a 7 year old in the same room is still on Scratch, and both are learning exactly what they need at their level.

Instructor Support Beats Online Tutorials Every Time

I know the appeal of online coding tutorials. They're convenient, often free, and your child can do them from home.

But here's the problem: there's no help if they get stuck. And children always get stuck. That's part of learning to code.

With our instructor-supported classes, if a child gets stuck, they can just put their hand up and the instructor comes over and helps them. That immediate support keeps them from getting frustrated and giving up. It also means they learn the right habits from the start instead of developing workarounds that create problems later.

Self-paced doesn't mean alone. Our children follow along at their own pace on the learning management system, but they're doing it in a classroom with support right there when they need it.

Always Try a Free Trial First

Parents sometimes ask if their child is ready for coding classes. My answer is always the same: come for a free trial and find out.

We recommend a free trial so the child can come along and try us to see if it's something that they like. If they do like it, then they can join up. If it's not clicking yet, that's fine too. There's no pressure.

Some children take to coding immediately. Others need a few sessions to warm up. A trial lets you and your child see what the classes actually feel like before you commit to anything.

What to Look for in After-School Coding Programmes

If you're comparing different after-school coding programmes in Ireland, here's what really matters.

First, look for a convenient location. If it's a hassle to get there, your child won't go consistently, and consistency is what builds skills.

Second, check the time slots. After-school programmes need to fit around your family's schedule, not the other way around.

Third, see if they offer a free trial. Any programme that believes in what they're doing should let your child try a class before you pay.

Fourth, find out if your child can join at any time and move along at their own pace. Programmes that only accept children at the start of term or that require everyone to stay in lockstep don't work for most families.

These practical factors matter more than fancy marketing or claims about which software companies they work with. What matters is whether your child will actually attend, engage, and learn.

Getting Your Child Started

Coding for kids doesn't have to be complicated. Start at the right age (around 7 to 8), choose a programme with instructor support and self-paced learning, and let your child try it before you commit.

We're running classes in Naas and Newbridge right now, and we're always happy to have new children join for a free trial. If you're elsewhere in Ireland, we're actively seeking partners to bring this approach to other parts of the country.

Your child doesn't need any prior experience. They don't need to be "good at computers" or have shown some special talent. They just need to be curious enough to give it a go. Book a free trial and see if coding is something they'd like to explore.

If your child spends hours playing Roblox, you’ve probably wondered whether all that screen time could actually be educational. The good news? There’s a massive difference between simply playing Roblox games and learning STEM through Roblox development. One is consuming content that others have created, whilst the other is building genuine coding skills that will serve children well into their future careers.

At Kids Coding Academy, we’ve seen firsthand how stem roblox projects transform children from passive gamers into active creators. Instead of just following what has already been built by others, children learn the concepts of game creation, programming, and development. Let me walk you through exactly what STEM skills your child can gain through Roblox development and how our approach makes learning accessible for all abilities.

What STEM Concepts Children Learn Through Roblox Development

Roblox game development teaches children how to improve their coding skills in a practical, engaging way. But it’s not just about the technical side. Children also develop crucial collaboration skills as they discuss their projects with one another.

When each child works on their own project and encounters roadblocks, they can share what they’ve done with their classmates. This peer learning approach allows them to see how others are thinking and progressing through challenges. It’s brilliant to watch children explain their solutions to one another—sometimes a classmate’s explanation clicks better than an adult instructor’s!

The beauty of stem roblox learning is that it combines technical skills with soft skills like communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking. These are the competencies that employers will value long after specific programming languages have evolved.

Creating Games Versus Consuming Them: Why It Matters

This distinction is crucial for parents to understand. If your child is just playing games, all they’re really doing is following what has already been built by someone else. There’s nothing wrong with play, but it’s a fundamentally different experience from creation.

When children engage with Roblox game creation, they’re actually building the game themselves. They’re making decisions about game mechanics, designing challenges, writing code to bring their ideas to life, and troubleshooting when things don’t work as expected. This is active learning at its finest.

Think about it this way: watching cooking shows doesn’t teach you to cook, but following a recipe and adjusting it to your taste absolutely does. The same principle applies to stem roblox development. Your child moves from being a spectator to being a creator, and that shift changes everything about how they engage with technology.

How Our Learning Management System Supports Different Ages and Abilities

One of the questions we hear most often is whether Roblox projects are suitable for both primary and secondary school students. The answer is yes, but with an important caveat: it’s not necessarily about their age—it’s more about their experience.

In our learning management system, different projects are graded based on the child’s experience level. Sometimes you might have a younger child who’s more advanced than an older child, and that’s perfectly fine. Children can work through projects in order of complexity, starting with a simple project and then moving on to more advanced ones as they get more skilled and confident.

Each child has their own account on our system, which records what they’ve completed. This allows our instructor to see exactly where each student is in their learning journey. During class, the instructor checks in with each child, seeing how they’re getting on, whether they’re stuck with anything, and helping them progress.

This individualised approach means that children aren’t held back by others or pushed ahead before they’re ready. They can learn stem roblox concepts at exactly the right pace for them, in a room with children of different ages and abilities.

How Parents Can Track Their Child’s STEM Learning Progress

I completely understand that parents want to know their child is actually learning valuable skills rather than just having fun. Here’s how you can tell the difference at Kids Coding Academy.

Our instructor provides feedback about what is being covered in each project. Every project has specific learning outcomes, and we keep a record of these. So when your child completes a project, you’ll know exactly which STEM concepts they’ve mastered—whether that’s conditional logic, variables, loops, or game design principles.

The learning management system gives us concrete data about progress. You’re not just relying on your child saying “it was fun” (though we hope they do!). You’ll have evidence of completed projects, skills acquired, and next steps in their learning journey.

Additionally, because children are creating actual games, you can see and play what they’ve built. There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching your child demonstrate a game they’ve coded themselves and explain how they solved particular challenges.

What Happens in a Free Trial Roblox Coding Class

If you’re curious about whether stem roblox development is right for your child, our free trial class is the perfect starting point. However, there’s one important detail to mention: if your child has no prior coding experience, they wouldn’t start with Roblox. They would start with Scratch instead.

Roblox development involves real scripting concepts that build on foundational coding knowledge. Children who have Scratch experience and have progressed past that stage are ready to try Roblox in a free trial class.

During the trial, your child gets to follow along with one project and see whether it’s something they’re interested in pursuing further. They’ll work at their own pace on our learning management system, with our instructor available to provide support and answer questions. This gives them a genuine feel for what our classes are like—there’s no pressure, just an opportunity to explore and create.

The trial also helps us understand where your child is in their coding journey, so we can recommend the most appropriate starting point for their ongoing learning.

Why Choose Kids Coding Academy for STEM Roblox Learning

Our approach to teaching stem roblox development centres on flexibility and inclusivity. We create a welcoming environment where all children can thrive, regardless of their background in coding or other activities.

The combination of our learning management system and experienced instructors means that children get the best of both worlds: structured coursework that guides them through projects, and human support when they need help or want to discuss ideas with others.

We’re based in Naas and Newbridge in County Kildare, and we’re currently seeking partners to expand to other parts of Ireland. Our model works because it’s built around how children actually learn—at different paces, through hands-on creation, and with support when they need it.

If you’re a parent in Ireland wondering whether your child should learn to code, you’re not alone. More and more families are recognising that coding isn’t just for future software developers—it’s a fundamental skill that helps children develop problem-solving abilities, logical thinking, and creativity. But with so many options available, it’s natural to have questions about when to start, what it costs, and how to find the right fit for your child.

At Kids Coding Academy, we’ve been helping children aged 7 to 15 discover the world of coding through our self-paced learning system. We’ve learned quite a bit about what works for Irish families, and I’d love to share some insights to help you make the best decision for your child. Whether your child has never touched a line of code or has been tinkering with computers for years, there’s a pathway that can work for them.

What Age Should Irish Children Start Learning to Code?

We find that age 7 is a good age to start learning coding. By this age, children have completed at least two years in primary school, so they’re used to learning in a structured environment. They’ve also been doing some maths, which gives them a foundation for understanding the logical thinking that coding requires.

At 7, most children have developed enough keyboard skills to navigate a computer comfortably. They’re also naturally inquisitive and keen to learn new things, which makes it an ideal time to introduce coding concepts. That said, every child is different—some might be ready a bit earlier, whilst others might benefit from starting a bit later. The key is that they have basic typing abilities and an interest in learning something new.

How Does Self-Paced Learning Work for Coding for Kids Ireland?

One of the questions we get asked most frequently is how children of different ages and abilities can learn together in the same classroom. The answer lies in our learning management system, which is truly the backbone of what makes Kids Coding Academy different.

Each child gets their own laptop and logs in to their own account on the learning management system. This means they’ll follow a tailored curriculum that’s right for their level, whether they’re complete beginners or have been coding for a while. The actual content they’re learning from is delivered by the learning management system, which presents lessons, exercises, and challenges suited to where they are in their coding journey.

If a child gets stuck, they can go back over something at their own pace, or they can raise their hand and ask our instructor for help. Children who aren’t getting stuck can move ahead faster. Rather than a traditional group setting where everyone has to move at the same speed, each child can progress independently. They’re not being held up or forced to speed up by other people in the class, which creates a much less stressful learning environment.

What Coding Languages Will My Child Learn?

The progression through different coding languages is carefully designed to build skills step by step. Children start off with Scratch, which is a block-based coding language. Scratch is brilliant for beginners because it allows them to understand coding concepts—like loops, conditionals, and variables—without getting bogged down in complicated syntax. They’re essentially dragging and dropping colourful blocks to create programs, which makes it visual and engaging.

Once they’ve got the hang of Scratch, they’ll often move on to Roblox and Minecraft. These platforms are fantastic because children are already excited about them, which means they’re motivated to learn the coding skills needed to create games and experiences within these worlds.

As they become more confident, children can then progress to Python, which is a text-based coding language used by professional developers around the world. Some children also explore JavaScript, depending on what they’re interested in. This natural progression from visual block-based coding to actual text-based programming languages gives children a solid foundation whilst keeping them engaged with things they find exciting.

How Much Do Coding Classes for Kids in Ireland Cost?

We know that cost is an important consideration for families, and we’ve worked hard to make our classes accessible. We charge €87 for a month, which gets your child one class a week. That works out at about €20 per class, which we think is pretty competitive compared to other coding classes in Ireland.

If you were to hire an individual instructor for one-on-one lessons, that’s going to cost considerably more. We believe some other coding classes out there are more expensive as well, so we think our pricing offers good value—especially when you consider the personalised learning experience each child receives through our learning management system.

Can My Child Try a Class Before Committing?

Absolutely. We give every child a free trial coding class. This gives them the chance to see whether they enjoy it, and it also gives us the opportunity to assess what level they’re at so we know what curriculum to set them on.

We’ve found that this trial class is invaluable for both parents and children. Sometimes parents worry that their child won’t enjoy coding, or that they’ll be behind others in the class. The trial session usually puts those fears to rest because children quickly see that they can work at their own pace, and there’s no pressure to keep up with anyone else.

Can Children Join Midterm or Do They Need to Wait?

Here’s one of the aspects of Kids Coding Academy that parents appreciate most: we don’t have terms. Our classes run all year round, and that’s the beauty of the learning management system—anybody can join at any time, regardless of their level of experience.

This means you don’t have to wait until September or January to get your child started. If you decide in March that you’d like your child to learn coding, they can start straight away. We can have a complete beginner and an intermediate child joining at the same time, and they’ll both work on independent curriculums tailored to their abilities. This flexibility makes it much easier for busy families to fit coding classes into their schedules without having to wait months for the “right” time to start.

Where Are Coding Classes Available in Ireland?

We currently offer live, in-person classes—we don’t offer any online sessions. Our classes are held in Naas in County Kildare and Newbridge in Kildare. We’ll soon be opening classes in Cavan as well, which will serve families in a new area.

We’re also actively seeking partners to expand to other parts of the country. If you’re in a different area of Ireland and would be interested in bringing Kids Coding Academy to your community, we’d love to hear from you.

Ready to Get Your Child Started with Coding for Kids Ireland?

Learning to code opens up a world of possibilities for children. It helps them develop skills that will serve them well regardless of what career path they choose, and in our experience, they genuinely enjoy it once they get started. The key is finding a welcoming environment where they can learn at their own pace without pressure or stress.

If you’re ready to see whether coding is right for your child, book a free trial class with Kids Coding Academy. There’s no commitment, no pressure—just an opportunity for your child to explore something new in a supportive, flexible environment. Get in touch with us today to schedule your child’s free trial session in Naas, Newbridge, or soon in Cavan.

Coding, or programming, is the process of creating instructions for a computer to follow. It is the foundation of all technology and is becoming an increasingly important skill for children to learn. In this article, we will explore some of the reasons why kids should learn to code and the benefits that it can provide.

First and foremost, coding teaches children problem-solving skills. When children are coding, they need to think logically and break down problems into smaller parts in order to create a solution. This type of problem-solving is a valuable skill that can be applied to other areas of life, not just technology.

Coding also helps children to develop critical thinking skills. Children must analyze and understand the problem they are trying to solve, and then design a solution using code. This process requires children to think critically and creatively, which are skills that are essential for success in any field.

Additionally, coding can also help children develop their creativity. When children are coding, they have the opportunity to create their own programs and digital projects, which allows them to express themselves and bring their ideas to life. This can be especially beneficial for children who may be more inclined towards creative pursuits.

Moreover, coding is a practical skill that is in high demand in the job market. As technology continues to advance, the need for programmers and developers continues to grow. Learning to code can open up many opportunities for children in the future, and it can give them a competitive edge when applying for jobs.

Coding can also be a great way for children to learn about the inner workings of technology. Understanding how technology works can help children to be more proficient users of technology and also to think critically about the technology they use every day.

Lastly, coding is a great way to build self-confidence and self-esteem. As children complete coding projects and see their programs come to life, they will gain a sense of accomplishment and pride. This can help to build their confidence and self-esteem, which are important qualities for success in any field.

In conclusion, learning to code is a valuable skill for children to have. It can provide them with problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills. It can also open up many opportunities for them in the future and helps them to understand the technology around them. Additionally, coding can be a great way to build self-confidence and self-esteem. With these benefits, it is important for parents, educators and after-school programs to provide children with the opportunity to learn to code.

Additionally, children are exposed to mathematical concepts such as geometry, measurement, and spatial relations when building their virtual worlds.

Roblox also have a built-in coding platform, Roblox Studio, that allows children to create their own games and experiences using the Lua programming language. Lua is a beginner-friendly programming language that is easy for children to learn, but powerful enough to create complex games and experiences. This allows children to learn important coding concepts such as loops, variables, and conditional statements, which are fundamental for any programming language.

Furthermore, Roblox has a large and active online community where children can share their games and virtual worlds, get feedback and learn from others. This provides children with a platform to collaborate and learn from one another, and it can help to foster a sense of community and belonging. This community also includes an online learning center, where children can find tutorials, learning resources and additional project ideas, to keep them engaged with learning and creating.

Lastly, Roblox also has a huge potential for real-world application. Many professional developers got their start on Roblox and continued to use the knowledge they gained on the platform in their career. It gives children a sense of the potential of what they can do with the knowledge they acquire.
